The key to successfully growing willow from cuttings is dealing with weeds. The easiest method being use of membrane to plant the cuttings through, see our Planting & Maintenance page for more information. However even without soil preparation or membrane of any sort, willow cuttings will still usually grow very successfully though not quite as vigorously.
Some willow varieties are hardy and fast growing and can grow over 2m from cuttings even in the first season, given the right conditions.
The best variety cutting to grow for producing rods for making willow structures is Salix Viminalis. It produces long straight rods ideal for this. Each cutting will produce 2-3 rods in the first season and 5-10 in subsequent seasons.
We offer a number of different varieties, some ideal for growing for fuel (logs or wood chip), some for basketry weaving, some for producing rods to make living willow structures, some for river bank stabilisation, some however have very attractive colour to new growth and attractive leaves and make excellent garden features and hedges.
We offer an excellent 'Super Willow' Hybrid which is extremely fast growing, ideal for heavy screening or for growing for woodchip or fire logs. For woodchip it is best to plant 25cm cuttings, for logs is is best to plant 2.5m rods. The rods give single trunk trees suitable for cutting for logs in as little as 4-5 years. The cuttings produce multiple smaller shoots which will thicken more slowly.
We offer selections of cuttings in bundles, either 1 or 10 of each variety. These give you opportunity to try a range of very different willow varieties. The photo shows 10 each of 17 selected varieties.
