The 25cm cuttings are ideal for woodchip production, and the rods give much better start if growing for logs. E.g. Plant the 3.0m rods in good location and will give excellent logs in just 4-5 years.
Typically the rods don't need support unless very exposed site and loose soil. just need pushing into the ground, ideally minimum of 1.5m apart, and through a membrane if planting straight into grass.

The Willow Hybrids have been developed for Biomass production for power stations and are very fast growing, excellent for growing for logs or woodchip. They are also good for screening if you are after a fast result. The can be used to produce lots of thin rods or thick single trunks in relatively short time.
Planting the rods (2.5m long ones are ideal for this) by simply pushing them into grass through a membrane gives fantastic results, very fast growth rate. If there are a lot of rabbits in the area it is worth using guards as per the photo. You do not need to stake them.
These trees are being used as fuel for two log burners providing hot water and heating. When cut down they produce 5-10 shoots the following spring which can but cut to leave just a single one to grow into another tree.
The ones shown are planted a little too close together, ideally for logs they should be a minimum of 2m apart in all directions.
If you are growing for wood chip it is better to plant 25cm cuttings that will each produce several shoots, these then being easier to process into chips than a smaller number of large logs.
